SET POINT A film review by Steve Rhodes

RATING (0 TO ****): **
SET POINT (TÄNA ÖÖSEL ME EI MAGA) is a one long enigma, with a partial explanation along the way that helps only a little.
Fashion model Carmen Kass plays Alice, a.k.a. "long legs," a statuesque and painfully thin brunette who doesn't say much but who does cry briefly while lip-syncing to opera as she drives her car. The other woman, Evelyn (Mariya Avdyushko), is a blonde who doesn't say much more. The story -- I think -- is a mystery about who killed Alice's boyfriend, after he said unkind things towards her in restaurant. This is the sort of movie that might elicit applause if anyone said anything, in hopes that the lines would finally advance the narrative a bit.
The sweet director, who was at our screening, said that people in Estonia don't show much emotion and are used to slowly paced pictures. I tried hard to crack this movie's mysteries but made absolutely no headway whatsoever. My suspicion is that, if someone explained every moment of it to me, I still wouldn't care.
SET POINT runs 1:30. The film is in Estonian with English subtitles.
The film is being shown as part of San Jose's Cinequest Film Festival (www.Cinequest.org), which runs March 2-13, 2005.
