EMMANUEL'S GIFT A film review by Steve Rhodes

RATING (0 TO ****): ***
EMMANUEL'S GIFT tells about an amazing life, that of Emmanuel Ofosu Yeboah, a young man from Ghana who was born with a severely deformed right leg. In a country with ten percent disabled, the disabled traditionally work only as beggars and never go to school. The discrimination against them is so intense that parents generally kill or abandon babies born with deformities. The only disabled kid in his entire school, Emmanuel always had big ambitions.
When Emmanuel grew up, he wrote to a United States foundation for a mountain bike. In order to publicize the plight of the handicapped in his country, he planned a six hundred mile bike ride across Ghana. The U.S. foundation was so impressed by him that they gave him, not only a bike, but a prosthetic leg as well. A recent recipient of a fifty thousand dollar grant from two U.S. foundations, he now has big plans to help the disabled in Ghana. And with Emmanuel, who has been compared to Forrest Gump, you can be confident that his plans will be successful.
EMMANUEL'S GIFT runs 1:10.
The film is being shown as part of San Jose's Cinequest Film Festival (www.Cinequest.org), which runs March 2-13, 2005.
