VERFLIXT VERLIEBT A film review by Steve Rhodes

RATING (0 TO ****): ** 1/2
In Peter Luisi's VERFLIXT VERLIEBT, Miro (Pablo Aguilar), a famous filmmaker, is about to make his next movie, which will be captured in a documentary on the Swiss German film industry. However, Miro has no script or production schedule. Oh yes, and he isn't much of a filmmaker at all really, much less a famous one. (The on-going joke of the pseudo-documentary is that none of the locals have ever even heard of anyone in this supposed industry.)
But, a reputation, even an imaginary one, proves enough to get actors and would-be actors to audition. For the crew, a house painter, who has always wanted to be a sound man, gets the job of his dreams, and, even though he's tall, he manages to spoil many shots by letting the boom mike drop into the frame.
The best part of the picture, which is a sweet screwball comedy, concerns Miro's intense desire for Mercedes (Sandra Schlegel), his film's leading lady, whom he mistakenly suspects has fallen for her costar.
So is there really a Swiss German film industry? The funny and cute VERFLIXT VERLIEBT is a good argument that there is.
VERFLIXT VERLIEBT runs 1:32. The film is in German with English subtitles.
The film is being shown as part of San Jose's Cinequest Film Festival (www.Cinequest.org), which runs March 2-13, 2005.
