RATING (0 TO ****): *

In Raoul Ruiz's THAT DAY (CE JOUR-LÀ), which we are told occurs in "the near future in Switzerland," the country appears to have added a fifth official language: boredom. If you like your farces funny, you'll be disappointed by this glacially paced and humorless comedy about a superrich lunatic named Livia (Elsa Zylberstein) and a friend of hers from the local mental hospital who are killing people and displaying the corpses around her fancy dining room table. A subplot involves some sinister, Fascist-like elements, with one radio report telling of a large multinational corporation controlling a key asset of some third world countries --not their lucrative oil or gold but their water supply. "That doesn't make any sense," Hubus (Rufus), before he is killed, says to Livia at the dinner table. The same could be said of the movie. Writer and director Ruiz never tells a coherent story nor does he provide any reason for us to care.

THAT DAY runs a very long 1:45. The film is in French with English subtitles. It is not rated but might be PG-13 for violence and would be acceptable for kids around 12 and up.

The movie will be playing as part of the 47th annual San Francisco International Film Festival (<http://www.sfiff.org>), which runs April 15-29, 2004.
