THE SONG OF BERNADETTE (1943): Starring Jennifer Jones, William Eythe, Charles Bickford, Vincent Price, Lee J. Cobb and Gladys Cooper. Music by Alfred Newman. From the novel by Franz Werfel. Screenplay by George Seaton. Directed by Henry King.

THE SONG OF BERNADETTE (Fox Studio Classics): In 1943 a "newcomer" to Hollywood named Jennifer Jones lit up the industry with her portrayal of Bernadette Soubirous and won a best actress Academy Award.

Jones, however, was no stranger to movies. A few years earlier, under her real name, Phyllis Isley, she appeared in a couple of B-Westerns and serials at Republic Pictures, then took off for New York to further her studies in acting.

Her lessons paid off and her performance in Bernadette can attest.

Like most DVD offerings in this very fine series from Fox, the transfer is pristine.

Extras include an episode of A&E's Biography on Jones, a theatrical trailer, a World War II newsreel of Jones visiting G.I.s and a most interesting and informative commentary track featuring two of Jones' biographers as well as one of legendary composer Alfred Newman.
