DOWN AND OUT WITH THE DOLLS A film review by Steve Rhodes Copyright 2003 Steve Rhodes RATING (0 TO ****): *
Welcome to Amateursville. Kurt Voss's DOWN AND OUT WITH THE DOLLS, which has all of the production values of a home movie, plays like a parody of a film festival reject. The only thing positive to say about this indie is that at least the camcorder is held steady.
About an all-female, punk rock band, the movie drifts aimlessly as you wait for the ending credits to release you from your misery. Although the characters demonstrate varying degrees of obnoxiousness, none are the least bit interesting or sympathetic.
"Your feelings aren't commercial," one of the rockers says to another. "Could we write something that might go somewhere?" Amen! Where are Josie and the Pussycats when you need them?
DOWN AND OUT WITH THE DOLLS runs 1:28. It is rated R for "strong sexuality, language and some drug/alcohol use" and would be acceptable for older teenagers.
The film opens nationwide in the United States on Friday, March 21, 2003. In the Silicon Valley, it will be showing at the Camera Cinemas.
