OYSTERS AT NAM KEE'S A film review by Steve Rhodes Copyright 2003 Steve Rhodes RATING (0 TO ****): **
OYSTERS AT NAM KEE'S (OESTERS VAN NAM KEE) is packaged into three acts that could labeled: sex, crime and revenge. Only the first of these three is at all successful. The dark last act is a complete disappointment and doesn't really fit in with the rest of the story.
Berry (Egbert Jan Weeber) is a guy who appears to be in his early twenties. Bored and restless in free-wheeling Amsterdam, he finally finds a purpose in his life when meets Thera (Katja Schuurman), a beautiful young woman who works as a lap dancer at a place called Hot Temptations. The movie is at its best when they share a tryst at her apartment. The sex is natural, explicit and erotic. It is light-years from the usual, over-edited Hollywood versions which usually seem to be choreographed as dance numbers combined with wrestling matches. Enjoy this sex scene since it is as good as the movie ever gets. After it, our lovebirds decide they need a vacation, so they engage in a scam to bilk people out of money. The movie goes downhill afterward.
OYSTERS AT NAM KEE'S runs 1:37. The film is in Dutch with English subtitles. It is not rated but would be an R for sex, nudity and drug usage and would be acceptable for older teenagers.
The film is being shown as part of San Jose's Cinequest Film Festival (www.Cinequest.org), which runs February 27 to March 9, 2003.
