WINNING GIRLS THROUGH PSYCHIC MIND CONTROL A film review by Steve Rhodes Copyright 2003 Steve Rhodes RATING (0 TO ****): ***
Their agent may have once called Devon (Bronson Pinchot) and Sam (Ruben Santiago-Hudson), "America's last surviving lounge lizards," but lately they've become a hit, thanks to Sam's newfound telepathic powers. After listening to one of those mind control tapes, Sam's brain has started being taken over by something known to him as the Conductor. When the Conductor is on the scene, Devon and Sam's new mental magic act sizzles.
The movie, Barry Alexander Brown's WINNING GIRLS THROUGH PSYCHIC MIND CONTROL, may have one of the worst titles on record, but it is a success, albeit not for the reasons you might expect. This isn't a silly comedy, with Pinchot delivering one of his hilariously over-the-top performances as he did as Serge in BEVERLY HILLS COP. Instead, it is a smart romantic comedy/drama in which Pinchot does a very touching piece of dramatic acting as someone who loses the only thing that matters in his life, his girlfriend, Kathy (Amy Carlson). Kathy once worked a singer with Devon and Sam, as they worked the wedding circuit. Now she's gone, and in a flashback we learn some of the reasons why.
Don't worry, the story isn't too serious. There are plenty of laughs, with the best coming in the opening routine when Sam reveals certain facts that an audience member didn't want his wife to know. The truth is out there, and sometimes it hurts. The movie won't hurt. You'll laugh; you'll cry; you'll have a great time. Okay, so maybe you won't cry, but you will be touched when Devon loses the best thing in his life.
WINNING GIRLS THROUGH PSYCHIC MIND CONTROL runs 1:33. It is not rated but would be an R for a drug scene and for brief language and would be acceptable for teenagers.
The film is being shown as part of San Jose's Cinequest Film Festival (www.Cinequest.org), which runs February 27 to March 9, 2003.
