HE LOVES ME, HE LOVES ME NOT... A film review by Steve Rhodes Copyright 2003 Steve Rhodes RATING (0 TO ****): ***
If Hitchcock had tried to remake FATAL ATTRACTION with a RUN LOLA RUN touch, HE LOVES ME, HE LOVES ME NOT... (À LA FOLIE... PAS DU TOUT) might have been the movie he would have come up with.
Director Laetitia Colombani gets maximum mileage out of Audrey Tautou, everybody's favorite little charmer from AMÉLIE. If ever there was an actress who epitomized purity and innocence, it would have to be Tautou. As a pixyish single woman named Angélique, Tautou takes all of the assumptions you have about her and turns them upside-down. Cinematographer Pierre Aïm and set decorator Odile Hubert create a bright and colorful world for Angélique's dark story.
When we meet Angélique, she is a happy woman with an attentive lover, Loïc (Samuel Le Bihan). Loïc is a well-off and accomplished cardiologist. The only problem between them, which we initially learn about, involves a lawyer named Rachel (Isabelle Carré). Rachel, who is pregnant, is inconveniently married to Loïc, but Angélique reassures her friend Héloïse (Sophie Guillemin) that this is not a problem since Loïc has promised to leave his wife. Hmm, where have we heard that one before?
Well, what we haven't heard before is everything that comes after this setup. If you think the mystery/thriller genre has exhausted all possible twists by now, you haven't seen Angélique in action.
HE LOVES ME, HE LOVES ME NOT... runs 1:32. The film is in French with English subtitles. It is not rated but might be PG-13 for some violence and would be acceptable for teenagers.
The film is playing in nationwide release now in the United States. In the Silicon Valley, it is showing at the Camera Cinemas.
