THE BEST AND WORST FILMS OF 2002 Copyright 2003 Steve Rhodes
This was a good year for motion pictures, even though there wasn't any film this year that, as soon as I had seen it, I knew it had to be the best movie of the year. Especially pleasing this year were a large number of popcorn movies this summer (including Reign of Fire, Eight Legged Freaks and XXX), which entertained without any aspirations of importance.
The movie that most impressed me this year wasn't eligible for my best of the year list since it was a re-release. It was the beautifully restored silent picture Metropolis with lost footage restored as well as the original symphonic soundtrack. I saw it three times and would have seen it more, but time ran out. Some other movies this year were worth many viewings, including and especially, Spirited Away and Chicago. One film, Das Experiment, so messed with my mind that you couldn't pay me to see it again, yet I do think it was one of the best films of the year for shear emotional impact. I saw it on a double press screening day, and the movie so devastated me that I was physically unable to stay for the second film.
I was able to break last year's record of 300 reviews, hitting the 317 mark this year. If you want to read my reviews, I have over two thousand now at my web site: InternetReviews.com. I also maintain an E-mail distribution list to which I send out my new reviews as well as a weekly opening day summary for theatrical releases and another for video releases. Drop me a line at Steve.Rhodes@InternetReviews.com if you'd like to be added to the list. It's free.
Happy New Year, Steve
