Looking for a feel-good film for a warm summer's evening? Try Fried Green Tomatoes, the talent-packed tale of two unusual Alabama friendships. Frustrated housewife Evelyn (Kathy Bates) meets a chatty elderly lady (Jessica Tandy) in a nursing home and becomes transfixed by the woman's stories. Miz Threadgoode, glad of the company, obliges with weekly narratives about Idgie (Mary Stuart Masterson) and Ruth (Mary-Louise Parker), two forward-thinking young women growing up in the racially divided South. All four actors sparkle in their roles, and director Jon Avnet throws in just enough humor to keep the film from veering off the sentimental deep end.
